Hilary Duff Gets Candid About Her Baby’s Colic and She Wants Other Moms’ Advice

Help a mom out — what worked for your baby?

By: Amanda Mushro

While you expect to have sleepless nights with a newborn, nothing can prepare you for a colicky baby. With the endless crying (not just the baby, but you too!) and the panic to find a solution that actually works, colic is rough on everyone. If you survived weeks of crying with a colicky baby, maybe you can offer celeb mom Hilary Duff some tips because she revealed that her two-month-old daughter Banks is in the throes of colic and Duff is at her wits’ end.

“Calling all parents of colic babies.....this ends right?” the mom of two writes. “Can you ever set them down without them screaming OR waking up? We have read everything the internet has to offer... nothing besides nursing basically every hour or less helps! We have done all the obvious things ... please leave magic tricks in comments.”

Duff’s post was flooded with comments from parents who have been there and survived colic. From gas drops for baby Banks, to Duff cutting out all dairy from her diet, and even a trip to the chiropractor, moms of the internet delivered some help in the form of options that worked for them.

According to the Mayo Clinic, doctors really don’t know what causes some babies to be colicky. Many agree it has to do with their immature digestive systems. Colic usually peaks in infants around six weeks old and usually the symptoms stop when they are around three to four months old. While that may sound like a short amount of time in a baby’s life, for the parents dealing with the nonstop screaming and crying, it can seem like an eternity.

My daughter was colicky and every night at exactly 7pm, she started to wail. Luckily it only lasted a few weeks, but those were a very long and sleepless few weeks. I searched the internet for solutions to ease her discomfort and for all of us to get sleep, but nothing really worked – she just needed some time.

While telling an exhausted new mom to “just give your baby some time” sounds like the worst possible thing you can say, hopefully some of the solutions that other moms sent to Duff will calm baby Banks and help the rest of the family get some sleep.
