Ugly Halloween Sweaters are All the Rage—Here’s How to Make a Boo-tiful One

If you don't feel like dressing up, you could take this DIY route!

Move over, Ugly Christmas Sweater. There's a new fashion faux pas in town, and it's the hottest trend of October--the ugly Halloween Sweater. The bad mix of colors, patterns, and knit blends that were once reserved for the unfashionable have now become a Halloween must have.

First, let's take a look at a few ugly sweaters in action.

You get treat bag and you get a treat bag. Everyone gets a treat bag!!!

I'm sorry, are those candy corn buttons? Need.

There's a lot happening here--and we like all of it.

Sassy and festive. We're here for it.

Can't decide between these gems? Just get them all.

While a thrift store is a great place to search for a vintage ugly Halloween sweater-think something a kindergarten teacher may have worn in the 80s-- you can find sweaters for the entire family, including pets, on Etsy, and even Target is jumping on the latest trend.

But if you are looking to DIY your own sweater, here's a few ways to get the best looking ugly sweater this Halloween season.

  1. Fabric stores are a great place to start. You can purchase a small amount of material with a Halloween pattern and glue or sew the material to a sweater. From haunted houses to friendly ghosts, your sweater will be spooky and fun.
  2. Buttons and pins are easy ways to add extra flair. So when it comes to ugly sweaters, more is more.
  3. If you find an ugly sweater that isn't Halloween themed, you can always add Halloween touches with fabric and paint. Grab a cat sweater and turn it into a Halloween cat. You are sure to be the hit of the Halloween party.
  4. Iron-on printer paper is a great way to find an image online and then simply iron the paper to a sweater. Super simple and super inexpensive.
