These Are the Pimple Patches My Teens and I Swear By
This is our favorite skincare secret and a quick fix for breakouts.
I’ve officially reached the point in parenting where my kids and I are actually sharing skincare products. While I wish that I didn’t still need something to help with the occasional breakout or pimple, here I am sharing pimple patches with my teen and tween. We’ve become quite the pimple patch experts over the past few years, and we’ve tried out quite a few to find the clear winner in a sea of patches.
Also, let me just say that I am extremely jealous of the current products on the market for clearing up breakouts for all skin types. The only products I could get my hands on during my teen years were super harsh and filled with crazy chemicals and perfumes. Luckily, there are options that work for both teens and adults.
If you do a quick search on Amazon, you will find tons of patches, but I’ll be honest, a lot are not worth your money. They either fall off quickly or they don’t work. After many failed attempts at using other patches, here’s the one that works the best for us: Mighty Patch.
If you’ve never used a pimple patch, here’s how the magic happens. Basically, a pimple patch — also known as a hydrocolloid patch — is a spot treatment that looks like a tiny round bandage. You place the patch over the pimple and it begins to absorb the fluid, speeding up healing. Some pimple patches may contain additional ingredients that help penetrate the skin and clear up the blemish. The patch also keeps you from touching your face and adding more dirt and germs to the breakout, or picking at the pimple causing it to bleed.
It’s best to wear the patch for at least six hours. So, I wear my pimple patches overnight. Some people wear their patches during the day to work or school. Whichever works best for you is the way to go. My kids say that some of their friends will wear the patch and put their foundation or concealer right over the patch so that it camouflages the patch during the day. Fortunately, I work from home, so any daytime patch wearing doesn’t require makeup.
The patch pulls all of the gunk out the pimple and when you take the patch off, the pimple is less red, smaller in size, and flatter. A pimple that would normally take days to clear up is gone much faster if you’ve got the right patch. I have to say, pulling off the patches is so satisfying and feels like I’m in my own episode of Dr. Pimple Popper!
One thing to remember is that while it won’t prevent new pimples from forming, it will speed up the healing process — and if you have sensitive skin, you’ll want to read all of the ingredients first or talk to a dermatologist for a recommendation.
Here are a few reasons why we love Mighty Patch:
- It works on my "mature skin" and my kids who have sensitive skin.
- There aren’t any chemicals in the original patch.
- No matter how long we wear the patches, they never fall off.
- The material is super thin, so my kids feel comfortable wearing the patches during the day to school.
- Most importantly, they work really well.
What are the downsides?
- Each patch is single use. A box comes with 36 patches and after each use, you’ll have to toss the patch.
- It doesn’t work on very deep pimples or breakouts. For those, you’ll have to wear patches for a few days until the pimple comes to the surface of your skin.
- These patches don’t work on cystic acne or blackheads.
- They don’t prevent pimples from forming. They just treat the ones you already have.
- If you have very oily skin or acne prone skin, you may want to try a patch that has more chemicals or ingredients that works better with your skin.
It’s so tempting to pick, scratch, and pop pimples, but we know that leads to scabs, scars, and even more breakouts. So, a pimple patch that works is a much better option. It may take a couple of rounds of patching before totally clearing up stubborn pimples and white heads, but I’ve found that it’s a better option than just letting nature take its course with my breakouts.
Another great patch to try if you have a cluster of breakouts is the Surface Patch. It’s much larger and will cover more of your skin instead of just the single patch.
If you give these patches a try, let us know how they work for you. And if you have a teen or teen at home, expect them to snag the box and start using them as well. Sharing is caring, right?
