For kids, is there anything better than waking up in the morning, seeing inches of snow on the ground and hearing the sweet words: “School’s canceled today.”

However, for the millions of kids who are attending school virtually this year, the hopes of a snow day seem to be dashed. After all, when your commute to school is simply opening up your computer, snow doesn’t seem to really be a factor.

With schools across the country already announcing that there will be no snow days this year because of virtual learning, one school district has assured kids that snow days are on.

Parents and students of the Mahwah Township Public Schools in New Jersey received the snow day policy update via email from school officials, and we imagine there were some very happy kids when this news broke.

“There are families that would rather we continue with virtual instruction instead of taking a day off for inclement weather,” Interim Superintendent Dr. Leonard Fitts wrote in his email. “We have decided that few childhood acts remain unchanged due to COVID-19 and we will maintain the hope of children by calling actual snow days due to inclement weather.”

Students in Mahwah Township are currently working in a hybrid learning model that includes some in-person classes. Fitts added that academics are not the only thing that contribute to the well-being of their students by writing, “Snow days are chances for on-site learners and virtual learners to just be kids by playing in the snow, baking cookies, reading books and watching a good movie.”

While so many things have changed for kids everywhere, it warms our heart to think of these students getting to enjoy every minute of their snow days.
