Keep It Kind
It’s World Kindness Day on November 13, and we could all use a little extra love. Kindness doesn’t have to come in the form of a giant gesture; it can be doing the little things that don’t take a ton of time for you that may be super meaningful for others. Kindness can mean being nicer online, something we highlighted in TLC's 10th annual Give a Little Campaign this October, because you never know who you are speaking to. It could be picking up trash that someone dropped in your neighborhood, or it could be talking to a friend in need. Here are ten ways to show a little kindness this season!
Bake Something
Who doesn’t love a sweet treat? Whether it’s to say thank you or just because, baking is always a great way to show kindness. Surprise a friend, gift to a coworker, or bring them to your hairdresser. Whatever you bake, the gesture will be well appreciated.
Leave Treats for Your Delivery Person
We’d guess that delivery people are very underappreciated. A simple gesture of kindness that can go a long way is leaving a basket on your porch filled with snacks and beverages for them to grab on their way back to the truck. With few breaks along their shift, they’ll greatly appreciate the hydration and nourishment.
Pay for the Next Customer's Coffee
They say kindness is contagious and we’ve definitely seen stories in the coffee line. If you buy a coffee for a stranger, they’ll often pass it along. Even if they don’t, you’ll make someone’s day by taking care of a special treat all in the name of a random act of kindness!
Send a Handwritten Note
We spend far less time writing these days, but that doesn’t mean a handwritten note isn’t super meaningful. Even a few words to someone can make their day. Write a note to your parents thanking them for just being them, to a friend who’s having a tough time, or to a mom who drove carpool for you one night. To know you took the time to write can be super meaningful.
Celebrate a Teacher
We all know teachers are overworked and underappreciated. Getting a small gift for a teacher (outside of teacher appreciation) is a nice gesture. It could be a coffee gift card, a new book for their classroom, art supplies, or a nice candle. Add a note to let them know just how great you think they are.
Volunteer
Volunteering is the ultimate act of kindness. Taking time out of your day for those in need is so meaningful and so well needed, especially this time of year. Choose an organization you are interested in, whether it’s making blankets for those in need, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or teaching disabled kids how to play sports. Your few hours will make such a huge impact.
Do a Favor for Someone
Asking for a favor is never easy, but being a friend who can foresee the favor needed is the ultimate act of kindness. If a friend mentions needing to hang up a photo on their wall, offer to help. Grab some grocery staples if you know they have a busy week or offer to pick up their kid from school. Doing a favor is such a great act of kindness.
Compliment Someone
Paying someone a compliment is an act of kindness that costs nothing and takes a second of your time. It could be a stranger who has an outfit you love or a friend who got a new pair of boots. It could be someone who went that extra mile or a cashier who was extra sweet. This is such an easy act to do and one we should strive for daily.
Shovel a Neighbor's Driveway
Snowy season is upon us in most parts of the country and taking the time to shovel for a neighbor — whether they’re elderly or you just feel like helping out — is such a kind act. If you’re out doing your driveway, why not add one more? Someone may pay it forward the next time it snows.
Shoot a Text
Sometimes just sending a quick "How are you?" to a friend can go a long way. Now that you can schedule texts, you can write a note even if it’s not an opportune time to send. You never know how someone is feeling and a message to show they that they’re on your mind can help them in so many ways.
