TLC is excited to share that Jazz Jennings has been chosen for GLAAD’s inaugural 20 Under 20 List, which features 20 young LGBTQ people who “are shaping the future of media and activism.”
“I am honored to be included in GLAAD’s 20 Under 20 list, which highlights LGBTQ voices who are using their platform to advance acceptance, equality, and visibility for LGBTQ people,” Jazz shared in an Instagram post. “All young people must recognize their influence and spark change for future generations. One day our children, and then our children’s children will be living in this world, so we must make it a more equal and loving place today and for the future!”
“At a time when millions across the country are taking a unified stand against racial justice, we are reminded of the undeniable impact that young people have when they use their voice and platform to call for change,” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis told Teen Vogue, who presented the list. “LGBTQ young people continue to shape the future of LGBTQ visibility, representation, and activism in unique and exciting ways, and this year’s 20 Under 20 list is a true reflection of the changemakers who are advancing the dialogue and accelerating acceptance for LGBTQ people.”
As a changemaker herself, Jazz Jennings, through her show “I Am Jazz,” has been at the center of transgender representation in media. The show follows Jazz, a transgender teen who was born male and has been living as a female since kindergarten. Throughout its seasons, viewers have seen Jazz navigate daily life and an emotional journey through her gender confirmation surgery.
Jazz is joined on the list by activist Emma Gonzalez, a survivor of the Marjory Stoneman-Douglas High School shooting who has since been at the forefront of gun reform conversations; as well as Jaime Margolin, the founder of the youth climate justice movement Zero Hour and one of the leaders for the official Youth Climate Marches in Washington, D.C., among others.
