A Feminine Feel with Fit-to-Flare

This body-hugging dress flatters almost any figure for a flirty but still refined design.

Insanely popular right now, the name of this style speaks to the silhouette and shape of the skirt. While the neckline can vary, there are two versions of the bodice — a trumpet or mermaid. A trumpet style is always fitted through the waist down through the high hip and then softly flares. A mermaid style is more dramatic and remains fitted further down the leg and then flares out.

“This is our number one shape right now. I love it because it allows brides to be able to show off their figures,” says Beth Chapman, owner of The White Dress by the Shore. “It works on all body types and it’s actually best if you do have curves because this style helps to define them. I also really prefer a fit-to-flare on someone who is petite. It turns their silhouette into an elongated line and helps them look taller. Just be aware that alterations might be needed. If someone is shorter than five feet, you have to adjust the point where the flare starts.”

While beautiful, this style can be a little difficult to dance in. So if you really want to get out and cut a rug, Chapman recommends going for the trumpet silhouette because it offers a little more freedom. You can experiment with the neckline and fabrication of this style too. Opt for something very minimal and clean or something more detailed like lace — both look great. And while Chapman favors a classic boatneck, she’s seeing a lot of V-neck options too.
