Crazy Cake by Grandma Burks

  • 1 1/2 cups of flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons liquid shortening
  • 1 cup of COLD water with 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar added
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Icing Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup oleo, softened
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup canned evaporated milk
  • 1 cup chopped pecans


Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Sift dry ingredients, flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt into the pan in which it is to be baked.

In medium bowl, mix shortening, water with vinegar, and vanilla together well.

Pour over sifted ingredients in pan and blend together with a fork.

Bake 18- 20 minutes until toothpick comes out clean from center of cake.

Icing Directions

Mix oleo, brown sugar, and evaporated milk together well. Pour over cake evenly.

Sprinkle with pecans.

Put under broiler until icing bubbles, careful not to burn it.
