Babee's Baklava

This favorite Greek sweet is delicious for dessert or for snacking during meal prep!

  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 3 cups ground walnuts
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter, melted

For the Syrup

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup clover honey
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 large orange, sliced
  • 1/2 cup brandy (optional)
  • 1 or 2 cinnamon sticks

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and grease a medium-sized baking dish with melted butter, using a pastry brush. You can use a ceramic, glass or metal dish.
  2. Mix together walnuts, sugar and cinnamon.
  3. Lay down one sheet of phyllo dough in your baking dish. Apply butter with a pastry brush. Repeat the process five times so you have six layers of buttered phyllo.
  4. Then, add one-third of the walnut mixture, sprinkling it across the sheet of phyllo in an even layer.
  5. Add another sheet of phyllo, and brush it with melted butter. Add one-third of the walnut mixture. Repeat the process until the rest of the walnut mixture is used up.
  6. Add six more sheets of phyllo on top, buttering after you layer each sheet.
  7. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond shapes, about 8x8 small squares. Bake for 40 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. While the pastry is baking, prepare your syrup. Put all of the ingredients in a medium pot and boil on low-medium heat for five minutes. Let the mixture cool.
  9. Remove orange slices and cinnamon sticks, and pour on top of the baklava as soon as it comes out of the oven. Serve your baklava hot or cold.
