Celebrating Fall Harvest, an Alternative to Halloween

Fall is my favorite season of the year. I love it when it starts to get cool, and especially in Arkansas, where we live. The trees are absolutely beautiful -- there are multicolored leaves everywhere you look. Leaves start falling, and the kids love to go out and rake up a pile and jump in them. When it gets cool enough we have bonfires and roast marshmallows and hotdogs.

We also love to have hayrides, and just enjoy being outside after a sweltering hot summer. Of course hot apple cider is really fun when we're having our hayrides, and hot chocolate -- all the things that you don't want during the summertime.

We've also taken our kids to a pumpkin patch to look at the variety of pumpkins, from the huge ones to the cute little gourds. There's a place near our house that has a corn maze, and the kids like to do that a lot. The little ones can get scared in the maze since they're too short to really see where they're going, but as long as they can see you they seem to be fine with the maze. If you crouch around the corner and have them follow you that's even more fun for them.

While we do go to pumpkin patches and corn mazes, we don't do the Halloween thing. From the beginning of our marriage we just kind of felt like we didn't want to celebrate that holiday. But we enjoy the harvest celebration. Our church fellowship has had different celebrations through the years that we've been a part of, ones where the children can play games and receive candy and toys and do all kinds of fun things, like a cake walk.

And it's a safe environment, one where you don't have to be concerned about some of the pranks and things that go on during Halloween. So we tend to do things like that during fall -- as soon as the weather starts to cool we begin to celebrate, whether it's gathering for a meal of our favorite autumn weather soups or having fun outside in nature.
