If your little girl came to you asking to shave her head, would you say yes? 6-year-old Aellyn Stannard's mom did, and has since set the internet ablaze with comments and opinions galore.

In a video Aellyn's dad, Peter, shared on Facebook, she is asked by her mom why she wants to shave her head. Her answer: "So nobody will have to brush my hair again!" (Judging by how loudly my kids protest when I brush their hair, I won't be surprised if they soon ask for the same.)

So Aellyn's mom, Paige Lucas-Stannard, said yes to what has now become a controversy-stirring request. But as she explained on her blog, Baby Dust Diaries, she at first figured Aellyn would quickly forget about it. "Wrong," she writes. "She talked about it the rest of the day and the next."

While she admits she struggled a lot with her daughters plea -- recalling how she "bawled [her] eyes out" after lopping off her own long, blonde locks at age 10 -- Stannard tries to teach her little girl (and readers of her book, Gender Neutral Parenting) to not be hemmed in by "laws of femininity."

"We should encourage people to be true to themselves and who they feel they are authentically," she writes. "Then no energy would be spend crying over cut hair in a beautician's chair. Energy that can be spent making the world a better place for all."
