Scott Campbell is a well-known New York City-based tattoo artist who's inked everyone from Sting to Courtney Love to Marc Jacobs (he's also married to actress Lake Bell). So what do you do when you've achieved major success? Shake things up, of course.

Last week, from Thursday at 9 a.m. to Sunday at 6 p.m., Campbell decided to give his fans the opportunity of a lifetime -- get a free tattoo from him. The only catch? They couldn't give any instructions or see the tattoo before it was finished. For "Whole Glory," as he called it, he built a white picket fence with a round hole the size of an arm. Brave men and women could then stick their arm through the hole where, on the other side, he would give them a yet-to-be-decided custom design. In an Instagram post he wrote, "I tattoo whatever I am inspired to do, and the recipient doesn't get to see until it's finished." Here's the setting:

Twenty-three tattoos were given through an in-person lottery, according to the New York Times, including one to their staff member Alexandria Symonds. She spoke to Campbell at the reception afterwards about how he prepped for the event and somehow managed to find the perfect tattoo for each participant.

"What was surprising is how much communication there actually is," Campbell told the New York Times. Though he planned a design for every person, he ended up changing them in real-time. "I'd sit there and I'd shave the arm, and I'd clean it off, and I'd be like, 'It's not right.' Yours included," he said. "Every single one, I changed my mind last minute. Who knows, maybe Malcolm Gladwell would say there are subtle, imperceptible clues I caught."

They range from minimalist designs to much more detailed and complex works of art, including plenty of skulls, flowers, and intricate details. Check out five of our favorites below, and see all of them on Campbell's Instagram account:
