We all should be giving a round of applause to Hayden Panettiere for bravely -- and very publicly -- admitting herself for post partum depression treatment.

Postpartum Depression, or PPD, is a much-misunderstood and often stigmatized affliction that is difficult to diagnose, and can be even more difficult to get treatment for. So when a celebrity of Hayden's level of visibility voluntarily seeks treatment, it's a victory for those hoping to bring more attention to this potentially dangerous condition. (The official statement given to E! News, who broke the story, said she is "voluntarily seeking professional help at a treatment center as she is currently battling postpartum depression.")

She recently posted a Tweet that celebrated her motherhood (and her post-pregnancy body), which didn't show any significant hints that she was suffering from PPD:

While there is a standard "6-week checkup" for most moms following their births, it can be hard to take time away from baby to make that OB-GYN appointment. Some are lobbying for the PPD checks to happen via a trained pediatrician at the baby's early checkups, since those are less likely to be skipped.

Hayden hinted at her struggle in a recent interview on Live! With Kelly and Michael about her Nashville character's postpartum depression, saying: "I can very much relate. It's something a lot of women experience," she said. "But you don't realize how broad of a spectrum you can really experience that on. It's something that needs to be talked about. Women need to know that they're not alone, and that it does heal."
