Quality Family Time

As a parent, you probably worry that your kids are getting too much screentime. But how about you? Are you getting too much screentime? In this digital era where even the youngest member of your family is attached to their favorite device, it may be time to put your entire family on a digital diet. You don't need to toss everyone's devices in the trash--I mean come, no reason to get crazy here--but now is a perfect time cut back on your family's tech time and engage in some disconnected quality time.

Plan Tech Free Time With Your Family- While there's nothing like snuggling up to your kiddos and watching a feel-good family movie, cut back on screentime for everyone and don't let yourself be tempted to check your email or social media in between popcorn breaks. For a fun and tech-free family night, start a family game night where you break out your old favorite board games and introduce a few new ones to your kids.

Let Your Batteries Run Out- Instead of charging and recharging your phone, tablet, and laptop throughout the day, let your batteries run out, and when they do, it's time to get away from all technology for the night.

Move Your Social Media- If you find you're spending way too much time checking your social media pages, try deleting the apps from your phone. Without having those handy apps in plain sight, you are less likely to get sucked into checking how many likes you have dozens of times a day. If deleting the apps from your phone seems to be too much of a commitment, just move all of those apps you tend to frequent too much to the last screen on your phone. If you don't see the apps each time you look at your phone, you'll be less likely to scroll to find them and then zone out using those apps.

Turn Off All Your Notifications- When you're home with your family, silence all of your notifications so that you aren't tempted to grab your phone and tablet each time you hear a bell or chime letting you know you have an email or a message on social media.

Make Certain Times of the Day "Digital-Free Zones" for Everyone- During meals, homework time, and bedtime, everyone has to turn off their devices, and that means you too!
