Top Christmas Toys of the Past 100 Years

Boy opening present on Christmas

While checking in last weekend on some of the mom forums I peruse, I noticed numerous posts and threads about obtaining some of the 'it' gifts this holiday season. Moms were trading intel on which websites would release batches of stock at which times; others lamented waiting in line for hours only to be told the coveted gift was sold out. A quick Google search yielded third-party sales of some of the hot toys for up to ten times their retail price (which made me sad about the state of society, but that's another post entirely).

All the talk of dazzling kids with that one Christmas gift they were dying to receive made me reminisce about the year my brother got one of the original Nintendo consoles (ironically, the remake of that video game console has also been a hot-ticket item this season), and of course, the Cabbage Patch doll craze of the 80's.

In a delightfully nostalgic post, Scary Mommy compiled an amazing list of some of the top Christmas toys over the last 100 years, filled with Easy-Bake Ovens, Slinkys and of course, Tickle-Me-Elmo. With a one year old son, we are still in the 'wrapping paper is as exciting as the gift' phase, but I definitely look forward to that excitement and magic that surrounds the holiday in the years to come (even if it might come at the expense of an early morning of waiting in line at the toy store). 'Tis the season!
