When Alanya Kolberg took her son Carson to the park, both parents and children were shocked by what they did.

At the advice of his mother, Carson didn't share his toys with the other kids.

When six boys approached Carson "demanding" to play with the toys he had, Kolberg advised him to say "no" if he wanted to, and that is exactly what he did. According to a Facebook post from Kolberg, she got some "dirty looks" from other parents, but remains steadfast in her decision to allow Carson to turn the kids down.

"If I, an adult," writes the mother, "walked into the park eating a sandwich, am I required to share my sandwich with strangers in the park? No!" Kolberg noted that her son looked uncomfortable when approached by the six strange boys.

Nonetheless, she uses this metaphor to highlight the larger message here.

"So really," she writes, "while you're giving me dirty looks, presumably thinking my son and I are rude, whose manners are lacking here? The person reluctant to give his 3 toys away to 6 strangers, or the 6 strangers demanding to be given something that doesn't belong to them, even when the owner is obviously uncomfortable?"

While it is important to teach kids how to share, it's also important to teach them about how to say "no" to people, set boundaries and practice self-care, she said.

"...Please remember that we don't live in a world where it's conducive to give up everything you have to anyone just because they said so," she concluded, "and I'm not going to teach my kid that that's the way it works."

Along with the story was a photo of her son sharing his toys with the child he truly wanted to share with: the daughter of Kolberg's friend.

What an insightful day at the park.
