These New Emoji Show That Women Can Do Anything

To celebrate yesterday's World Emoji Day, Google unveiled tons of new emoji that feature women doing a wide variety of jobs and activities. Women can now be surfers, runners, doctors, detectives and much more.

According to Google, 90 percent of the world's population uses emoji. However, emoji have long struggled to represent enough of those people. They made leaps and bounds when they introduced emoji in different skin colors. However, it's confinement of women to gender normative roles has been, problematic to say the least.

For a while now, men got to be detectives, police officers, and swimmers...


While women were limited to being brides and princesses.

Google partnered with Unicode to add 11 new professional emojis, which will each be available as men or women.

Additionally, 33 existing emoji will each have a male and female version. You can now choose a woman lifting weights, or a guy getting his hair cut.
