“The Power of Makeup” is Stronger Than Ever Thanks to This Trend

"The Power of Makeup" video by YouTuber NikkieTutorials set off a worldwide beauty phenomenon when she posted a tranformative clip of her half-made-up face. She made it as a response to the #IWokeUpLikeThis trend of women posting makeup-free photos, and those who used it as an opportunity to shame those who view makeup as an unnecessary crutch.

She this month posted to Instagram a shot of her half-and-half face with the words:

"Stop the makeup shaming and let's get inspired by amazing talent worldwide on this Instagram page #powerofmakeup"

And since then has used the page as a place -- and #ThePowerofMakeup hashtag -- to celebrate the range of ways women are using makeup to transform and express themselves, either as a way to overcome their lack of confidence due to skin conditions or to defy normal beauty standards.
