When in need of some sort of item from the medicine cabinet, the last thing you want to do is run to the store to get it. Here is a handy list to make sure your cabinet is always stocked with the essentials

  1. Pain, Headaches and Fevers - The last thing you want to do when you're feeling like you're coming down with something is head to the drug store. Be sure to have some sort of Ibuprofen on hand - bonus, you'll also want to grab a thermometer.
  2. Stomachache and Digestive Issues - Although it might be embarrassing to have (you can always position behind other things in the cabinet for those snoopy guests), having antacids and/or bismuth subsalicylate (aka Pepto-Bismol) on hand (the pink magic as my father called it), on hand is a must. Imagine going to the drug store with stomach issues and running into someone, not ideal.
  3. Cuts and scrapes - especially if you have kids, having band-aids, anti-septic wipes and antibiotic ointment is a must (to prevent infections).
  4. Bug bits and other itching - Nothing will make you lose sleep like scratching bug bites, plus you don't want them to scar. Be sure to have calamine lotion to sooth the itch and antihistamine (Benadryl) on hand. Note: Benadryl and similar drugs may cause sleepiness, so be sure to read the labels (like with all drugs) before consuming.
  5. Congestion and Coughs - There are hundreds of cough medicines out there, some will knock you out, which maybe just what you need, and others are meant to take during the day. This in combination with throat lozenges should be a huge help.
  6. Itchy, dry eyes - Eye drops aren't something you use every day, but something that will come in handy when you least expect it.
  7. Tweezers - Not just for grooming purposes, but to remove splinters.
  8. Moisturizing Lotion - Moisturized skin is happy skin, one with SPF is best, so that you can both take care of dry skin and protect it from harsh UV rays.
  9. Toothpaste and toothbrush - This probably goes without saying, but in addition you should always have an extra new toothbrush on hand for unexpected houseguests, especially if you have kids who have friends sleeping over, this is one thing they are sure to forget.
  10. Cotton balls - You never know when you're going to need a cotton ball, bit it applying calamine lotion to a bug bite or removing nail polish.
