When you're a stressed out parent, you will take all the help you can get, even if it is from a hair tie. Shuana Harvey, mother of a 4-year-old, was searching for a way to be more understanding and patient with her son. She saw herself becoming the impatient parent who would cries every other day due to the pressures of parenthood. She decided enough was enough and found a simple trick to help her keep her cool and gain a better relationship with her child.

Every morning, Harvey wakes up and puts 5 hair ties on one wrist. Every time she snaps, says unkind words or gets impatient with her child she moves one band to the other wrist. In order to get that band back, she must say something positive or do something kind for her son. The idea is to have these 5 bands on the same wrist at the end of the day. "I read that science shows for every bad reaction it takes 5 positive reactions to regain a positive relationship," Harvey stated on Instagram. "I'm going to be using this method until it becomes a habit and basically turns into an auto pilot ritual."

Harvey still swears by this hair tie trick and has received responses from parents everywhere. Kelly Holmes, blogger of The Reformed Idealist Mom, was Harvey's inspiration for this technique. "Full disclosure: I thought this was a fluke. That it would wear off overtime, and I'd revert to being an angry mom again." Holmes wrote in her blog post. "But months later the hair tie trick still works wonders. I talk to my preschooler with love and kindness instead of annoyance and frustration." We all have impatient moments, however, it is what we do to make up for those moments that count. This simple trick can be used for anything/anyone in your life that makes you impatient. You can try this with your children, spouse, coworkers, etc. It only takes 5 hair ties to make the move towards a happier stress-free life.
