The Barely There Styles of The VMAs

Kanye West may or may not have announced his candidacy for President in 2020, and Justin Bieber may or may not have been crying because he was happy with his performance, but one thing is certain about this year's VMAs: most of the fashion was barely there. (And we mean that in the figurative as well as literal sense of the word.)

Britney Spears paid homage to the sparkly, flesh-tone outfit that was so shocking in her 2000 VMAs performance, but by today's standards is practically modest.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian showed up, but their style mostly stayed at home. Kanye's outfit seemed more appropriate for a run to the convenience store, and Kim's cargo-inspired dress wasn't the glam we've come to love from her.

I can't believe my eyes!! Kanye & @kimkardashian are UNREAL! #VMAs

Kim's sisters, on the other hand, definitely deserve some good marks -- especially Kourtney Kardashian, who is rocking that red jumpsuit like she was born to do it.

Nicki Minaj
's gold gown was a nice nod to the formal deco era, and despite its plunging-all-the-way-down neckline was one of the relatively modest looks of the night. It was sewn onto her so tightly, though, that she needed a hand from Rebel Wilson when she went up to accept an award.

@nickiminaj is FLAWLESS! ? #VMAs

Anyone who follows VMA host Miley Cyrus on Instagram couldn't have been surprised to see her showing almost everything, but this made even us blush a little bit.

Much as we love Taylor, we can't help but be reminded of ice skating costumes here, and we're not even sure what to say about what's going on with Nicki's outfit, except that she must have great balance to be able to wear that headdress while dancing.

About that performance though ?? // Regram: @mtvnews (?: Getty)

Not that we truly mind seeing a little bit of skin, but we have to hand it to Selena Gomez for bucking the barely there trend for this full-sleeve, full-length number.

Applause to Kelly Osbourne for A) finding a new red carpet host gig and B) wearing a jumpsuit we'd consider office-appropriate!

The crop-top trend won't be going away anytime soon -- not if Taylor Swift has anything to say about it, and she certainly does in this sequined houndstooth number.
