William and Kate marked Prince George's fourth birthday on July 22 by releasing a new photo of the third-in-line to the throne, a portrait that captures the little royal with a big smile. The picture, taken by Chris Jackson at Kensington Palace, is more formal than the photos the family released for George's third birthday, which showed him standing on a swing, playing outside, and sharing an ice cream cone with the family dog, Lupo.

Earlier in the week, during the royal visit to Germany, George and Charlotte climbed in and out of helicopters in Hamburg, with George looking appropriately awed by his turn in the pilot's seat.

At four, the Prince is now old enough to move up from nursery school to primary school: His parents will enroll him at Thomas's in Battersea in September. The co-ed day school is a departure from royal tradition -- both William and Harry started their education at boys-only pre-prep school Wetherby -- but the choice of a co-ed environment means both George and Charlotte could attend school together.

On Instagram, the palace wrote, "The Duke and Duchess are very pleased to share this lovely picture as they celebrate Prince George's fourth birthday, and would like to thank everyone for all of the kind messages they have received."
