Parents Are Flipping Out Over This Kindergarten Checklist

As families are gearing up for the start of a new school year, one parent posted the district's suggested kindergarten readiness checklist with the title, "Hamilton County schools have unrealistic expectations." The list has only 11 items, and while some of them aren't too difficult -- identify colors and basic shapes, draw a picture and talk about it, say their name-- others, parents point out, are the whole reason kids go to kindergarten in the first place: To learn to write their name, use scissors, hold a pencil. One requirement stands out, though: "Identify 30+ letters." While the teachers are most likely including uppercase and lowercase letters -- which can look completely different to a young child -- it's enough to confuse any parent.

How does this list compare to your school's kindergarten readiness checklist?
