The view outside your window may be snowy, dark, and gloomy, but the Pantone 2017 color of the year -- a lush, vibrant shade called Greenery -- is a welcome reminder that spring is on the way.

The Pantone Color Institute chooses a Color of the Year every December for the months ahead. It's a "color snapshot" that company says illustrates the global mood; this year, says Institute Executive Director Leatrice Wiseman, "Greenery bursts forth...to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment."

After 2016's pastel Color of the Year pair -- the blush Rose Quartz and gray-blue Serenity -- and the previous years' jewel tones (reddish brown Marsala, rich Radiant Orchid, glossy Emerald, bright Tangerine Tango), Greenery is a fresh, energetic choice that Pantone describes as "life-affirming." Look for "nature's neutral" paired with earthy browns and grays; bold blues and coral; cheery yellow, orange, and pink; or ocean-inspired aqua, lime, and teal. "Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors," says Pantone, "the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate, and reinvigorate" -- a very welcome instruction for the New Year.
