One Man’s Act of Kindness Makes All the Difference

The parking lot at your local department store may not be the first place that comes to mind when you hear the phrase "acts of kindness" -- especially if you're used to fighting the line when the big-name collaborations are released.

But that may be why James Varnado of Kenner, Louisiana, made such a big impact when he shared his umbrella with his fellow shoppers to keep them -- and their new purchases -- dry while walking to their cars.

Former reporter Deepak Saini took a picture of Varnado sheltering a woman as they walked together in the rain, and posted it to his Facebook page where it's been shared more than 3,800 times.

For Sani, the beauty of the photo wasn't just in the connection between the two subjects. He told Today, "My heart was hurting...The gloomy weather was making me think of everything that was going on."

He says the photo reminded him "that kindness is more important than fighting about race. We're becoming such a divided nation. There are bad people in every ethnic group, but I believe there are more good people across the board."
