New Takes on BBQ: 10 Things We Didn’t Know You Could Grill

Now that it's summer, it's time to fire up the grill. Tired of the usual burgers and dogs? Variety is the spice of life, so add some spice to your life this summer, and try these new grilling favorites.

1. Watermelon

Nothing says summer like watermelon and grilling, so let's double down and grill our melon! Up the ante and the flavor by adding jalapenos and grilled lemon slices.

2. Clams

 

If you've never tried grilled clams, you're really missing out. They have a slightly drier, fresher, and crisper taste when done on the grill, as opposed to the more wet and chewy consistency clams have when boiled. Don't worry, you can still dip them in butter to make them even more awesome.

3. Brie


Yup, you can throw a slab of brie cheese on the grill! How genius is that? No marinade required. If you grill a full round of brie with the rind on, you won't need to worry about losing all that melted cheese down inside your grill.

4. Banana

 

You can stuff your banana with chocolate, or just grill it plain. The result is a caramelized, custard-y sweet treat for dessert.

5. Figs

 

Wrap figs in bacon for a savory appetizer, or grill figs plain or brush them with honey. Serve them with cheese for another appetizer, or straight up as a dessert.

6. Pizza

 

Why not, seriously. It's one of the world's favorite foods. Just because you're grilling doesn't mean you can't have pizza tonight. Go for it and don't feel bad about it.

7. Potatoes

 

So maybe potatoes aren't that groundbreaking as a grilling food, but it's an oft overlooked option. Ditch the old school potato salad at your next BBQ and opt for grilled taters instead.

8. Rice Balls

 

For another great side dish, grill rice balls. These are especially great if you grill fish and pineapple alongside your rice balls for a Polynesian flair.

9. Octopus

 

Octopus goes well naturally with BBQ sauce, so go rustle up an octopod for your next picnic. Before grilling, octopus must be tenderized in some way.

10. Salad

Grilled romaine might sound like a wilted mess, but if you grill it right, you're going to get some crisp sweetness from the caramelization. This means even better flavor and texture than tired old greens.

The next time you grill, get creative and see what you can add to your grill. If it requires heat to cook, it can most likely get cooked on the grill--if not directly over the coals, then on top of foil. Have fun creating new summer flavors and family grilling traditions.
