Money-Saving Tip: Calculate as You Shop

Counting price

Some grocery stores offer scanners that let you total your groceries as you put them in your cart -- which is a guaranteed way to stop yourself from adding impulse buys, since you can see exactly how close you are to hitting your weekly budget (and how many items you have left on your list) before you put that extra box of cookies in your bag. If your store doesn't offer this service, try shopping online to see your total go up as you add things to your cart, or keep the calculator app open on your phone to tally each item as you put it in the cart. Shopping with kids? Put them in charge of adding up each item as you go, and make a deal that if you have money left over at the end of the trip you can circle back for one of their must-have treats.
