Love Ombre Hair? Balayage Will Be Your New Favorite Hair Color Trend

Forget ombre! The latest hair sensation is balayage (sounds like bah-lay-AHGE), and though it's been around since the '70s, it's become the latest trendy hair coloring technique. Don't believe us? It has more than 1.3 million people using #balayage on Instagram.

Unlike normal highlight techniques, which typically use foil or caps, balayage is done by hand. The process allows your colorist to do everything from natural highlights to stronger colors, and the benefit for you is that hair color grows out a bit more naturally (aka lets you wait longer between salon visits). Plus, it gives that sun-kissed look that's seen all over red carpets. Actress Rose Byrne, below, is a good example of it:

It can be done on blondes, brunettes and redheads, and colorists often separate the hair in sections and then use a brush to apply color (Watch a hairstylist demonstrate it). Though it can be pricier than foil treatments (hey, there's a lot more work involved!), many women, including celebrities like Giselle and Sarah Jessica Parker, swear by it. It's especially flattering on ladies who rock loose waves, since sharp, strong haircuts require stronger colors. Talk to your stylist about it today -- they'll be impressed with your hair knowledge.
