Too Close To Home Star Shares a Vegan Gravy Recipe

Although it may seem impossible to some, vegans do have fun on Thanksgiving. This vegan's #UNameItChallenge video is a real testament to the enthusiasm that this community feels about a meatless Thanksgiving.

Despite the holiday's reputation as heaven for the meat lovers among us, more vegans and vegetarians are sharing their own ways to make your favorite holiday dishes delicious AND nutritious. We're impressed and also curious about how to accomplish this. So, we asked Too Close To Home's Brooke Anne Smith about how to make a Thanksgiving staple like gravy into a dish any vegan or carnivore could enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • onion
  • garlic
  • nutritional yeast
  • whole wheat flour
  • soy sauce
  • sage
  • thyme
  • salt and pepper
  • water

Directions:

  1. Sautee onions with sage and thyme.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of nutritional yeast to mixture. Stir.
  3. Add 1/2 cup of whole wheat flour to mixture. Stir.
  4. Stir mixture together over medium heat for 10 minutes. It will appear very thick.
  5. Slowly add in enough water to thin mixture and give it a smoother consistency.
  6. Add in desired amount of garlic to taste.
  7. Add in desired amount of soy sauce to taste.
  8. Let simmer for 30-40 minutes.
  9. Add more whole wheat flour and nutritional yeast to thicken the gravy. Add in more water to thin the gravy.
  10. Enjoy!
