We all know Kate Gosselin as a loving mother whose world revolves around taking care and spending time with her eight kids.

In August 2016, Kate revealed that she had enrolled 12-year-old Collin in an away from home program to help him cope with "educational and social challenges." As Kate revealed in an interview with GMA, "it was not even really a choice" but rather the advice of his doctors that ultimately guided her to make this decision.

The live-in learning program will work with Collin on his unique needs. When speaking with PEOPLE, Kate said "there's a fairly fluid diagnosis of what those needs are, but he needs to learn certain strategies to help him deal with things." While away, she maintains contact with Collin but says "it's not the same as being at home."

Reflecting on his time away thus far, Kate explained to PEOPLE, "I'm very happy with the care that he's getting, and am still completely comforted by the fact that he is so clearly exactly where he needs to be, getting precisely what he needs." She added, "it comforts me as a mother, because when you, as a mom, can't give your kids what they need, it is a huge comfort to find people who can."

As a single mother of eight, Kate is familiar with just how difficult making such parenting decisions can be. But she made it clear when speaking with GMA, that that isn't something she'll shy away from. "I'll go to the ends of the earth for the best for each of them."
