And the verdict is in- Cargo Shorts are the universally hated clothing item for men. According to the Wall Street Journal, cargo shorts are causing marriage problems left, right, and center.

The loose-fitting shorts with giant pockets on the sides are beloved by men everywhere for being as practical as they are comfortable. They're loose, breathable for the summer, and can fit many things in the pockets.

But their wives have had enough. 35-year old Ashleigh Hansen sneaks her husband's cargo shorts off to Goodwill when he's not around. She says "I despise them. There were so many good things about the '90s. Cargo shorts were not one of them."

Over the course of their 11-year marriage, her husband Dane has noticed over 15 pairs of cargo shorts slowly disappear out of his closet.

According to fashion historians, Cargo shorts came onto the scene around the 1940s for military use, but it wasn't until the '90s that they became mainstream. Popular surf brands that were the height of cool in the '90s ran ads that featured models wearing nothing but cargo shorts.

These days, the cargo short has become the "dad" staple. Joseph Hancock is a professor of fashion merchandising at Drexel University. He says "Those teenagers are now married, and they don't get rid of their clothes. They don't evolve." And this is coming from a guy who wrote his Ph.D. thesis on cargo shorts!

When 45 year old Jen Anderson's husband purchased a pair of denim cargo shorts, she immediately made him return them through what she describes as "strong mocking." She doesn't want her husband to be seen in public like that. "It's a reflection on me, like 'How did she let him out the door like that?' " she says.

The cargo short is slowly phasing out of being socially acceptable. Upscale golf courses have even started to ban cargo shorts. In 2012, a Miami golf course made headlines when they asked Michael Jordan to change out of his cargo shorts.

What do you think? Love em or hate em?
