    As someone who grew up in the South, I know all too well that mayonnaise adds a creamy texture and buttery flavor to any dish. But as a former health editor, I also know that this condiment is bad news for heart health and slim waistlines.

    Unfortunately, there aren't many foods that make good substitutes. Greek yogurt is too tart and low-fat sour cream just doesn't cut it. That's where avocados come in. Though two tablespoons of these fruits have half the calories and a third of the saturated fat of a similar serving of mayonnaise, their texture and flavor profile only add to recipes.
