When you're planning a family vacation, odds are you just want to GET there. But before you can zone out and relax, there's this little thing you have to do called packing. Our life hacks expert Amanda Mushro just got back from a Princess Cruises vacation and shared some of her best packing hacks:

Begin with the basics.
Start with packing the essentials you know you'll absolutely need. Here's a good checklist to get you started:

  • Clothes and shoes for excursions
  • Formal clothes
  • Pajamas
  • Relaxing clothes
  • Day clothes
  • Bathing suits

Lay out your itinerary
Once you have your basics covered, take a look at your itinerary. List out the activities you know you'll be doing every day and pick out individuals outfits based on those activities. This may seem like an extra step, but it's super helpful to make sure you have everything you'll absolutely need and you're not tossing in random items at the last minute.

Pull out unnecessary items
Once you have everything laid out, take a look at your check list again. Put aside the clothes you know you'll absolutely need, and then scale back whatever is extra.

Don't forget your documents
Your packing checklist should really go beyond the clothes you'll need for a vacation. Buy a folder or binder to keep all of your important documents such as passports, airline tickets, and itineraries all in one place.

What do you need for your kids?
Don't forget you'll need some travel-day activities for your kids. Leaving space for whatever toys, games, or electronics they may need will make your traveling way less stressful.
