When firefighter Marc Hadden responded to an emergency call in 2011 for a woman reporting extreme abdominal pain, he found two surprises. First, the pain wasn't just a stomachache: The woman was in active labor, and Hadden and his partner ended up delivering a baby girl in the ambulance in the parking lot.

The second surprise was even bigger: Hadden and his wife, Beth, had been thinking about adopting a baby -- and the mother was planning to put the newborn up for adoption. Less than six months later, the baby girl -- named Rebecca Grace -- was officially part of the Hadden family, joining older brothers Parker and Will. Now a gymnastics-loving 5-year-old, Gracie knows the story of her remarkable birth.

"If you ask her where she was born, she says, 'My daddy delivered me in the back of an ambulance,'" Hadden told TODAY. "It still breaks my heart to think of one day having to explain it to her more in depth...because she doesn't really 100 percent get it." But though Hadden and his wife still sometimes feel surprised at how Gracie's adoption "happened overnight", they "wouldn't trade it for anything," he says. "She is part of our family and that is absolutely the way it is."
