The South is known for going big when it comes to weddings (just ask "Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta" experts Monte Durham and Lori Allen). From huge hair to massive guest lists, it will probably come as no surprise that southern brides are also recruiting more than a few bridesmaids.

Priceonomics used data from Weddington Way to take a look at the size of bridal parties across the country and found that the average bride has 4.39 bridesmaids. But, as you can see in the chart below, southern brides are including more than just their BFFs.

Louisiana has the most bridesmaids per state, followed by South Carolina and Alabama, and Charleston, South Carolina, wins the title as "bridesmaid capital of the world," with an average of five bridesmaids per wedding. Once your bridal party hits seven, it is considered uncommonly large. If you have 10 or more bridesmaids, you're in the top 2 percent of weddings.

As a former southern belle, I can't say I'm surprised by this data. But being part of your friend's wedding party doesn't come cheap -- some research shows that being a bridesmaid comes with a $1,500 price tag!

I guess the bottom line is that if you don't want to be a bridesmaid, don't make friends with any southern ladies. Kidding (sort of)!
