Model turned cookbook author Chrissy Teigen is no stranger to causing controversy on Twitter. After all, she once quit the social network after receiving death threats caused by a gun control tweet. This week, she is speaking out about in vitro fertilization (IVF) via 140-character soundbites, and it is causing quite the stir.

After being open about her struggle with fertility issues, Teigen shared she became pregnant after years of IVF (and is said to have given herself shots during photoshoots).

On Wednesday, she posted her interview with PEOPLE which details the IVF process and one controversy-stirring detail: she and husband John Legend chose the sex of their child. "Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, 'Let's put in the girl," Teigen told PEOPLE.

With the advancements made in fertility, those who use IVF can choose the gender of their baby or eliminate the possibilities for certain disabilities or genetic diseases. But this process isn't without criticism.

There are a number of unanswered questions when it comes to parents controlling aspects of their children's genetic makeup. Could it lead to future mutations? What will it mean for future generations?

It seems as if Teigen wasn't prepared for the comments she began to receive. She believes because she already "created the embryos with a doctor," choosing between a boy and girl embryo isn't such a big deal.

For now, she is educating fans -- Teigen was rapidly responding to people's questions about how the process works during the discussion -- and she said she isn't trying to change anyone's beliefs. Her openness about her experience is continuing the conversation about IVF and what is possible in the future of fertility.
