This past Friday, more than 17 million people watched Bruce Jenner, gold medal winner and step-father to the Kardashian clan, proudly state "for all intents and purposes, I am a woman." After months of people speculating why he was growing his hair long and having surgery on his Adam's apple, the former athlete and reality star explained to Diane Sawyer that he was transitioning into a woman.

During his conversation with Sawyer, he claimed he'd been living this lie for more than 40 years: "So here I am, stuck," he said. "And I hate 'girl stuck in a guy's body.' I hate that terminology. I'm me. I'm a person. And this is who I am. I'm not stuck in anybody's body! My brain is much more female than it is male. It's hard for people to understand that. But that's what my soul is."

Though he may be an unlikely champion of transgender rights, his celebrity may help others in his position deal with discrimination. ABC also addressed the violence and injustice transgender men and women face every day. Transgender teens, in particular, are at risk for depression -- close to half will attempt suicide. This summer, TLC will air its own show "All That Jazz," detailing the life and struggles of transgender teen Jazz Jennings. She tweeted her support on Friday night:

We're excited for Jazz to share her story!
