August 31st will mark the 20-year anniversary of Diana Spencer's death. 20 years since the terrifying night when the world lost and icon and two boys lost their loving mother.

People around the world, from all walks of life experienced loss and grief when news of Princess Diana's death hit the press. In 1997, she was no longer the official "Princess of Wales" but she always remained the "People's Princess" and this was obvious in the heartache that was displayed after the tragic accident in the tunnel.

A dark cloud settled over Britain as people cried out in sadness and terror that someone so young and so innately good was suddenly gone over night. The responses to Diana's death were shocking and in the U.K they were overwhelming. This was a death that people did not want to accept.

In the days immediately following the accident, people made trips to Kensington Palace to leave flowers and pay their respects to Diana. Technically, she wasn't a member of the Royal Family when she died but the British people still expected her death to be treated as such. The public was extremely vocal about their grief but the Royal Family remained silent for days. In fact, it wasn't until 5 days after Diana's death that the Queen took the time to acknowledge it.

Finally, the Queen had to give in to the demands of the people and allowed there to be a public funeral for Diana. The response was astonishing. Over one million people took to the streets of London to pay their respects on the day of the funeral.

September 1st, 1997 was not just devastating to Diana's family, it disrupted the world. And 20 years later we still mourn the loss of such an incredible woman.

Many people disagree about the exact events that led to the car crash in Paris that night. And some argue that there are still questions that remain unanswered.
