Take your taco game up a notch with these delicious, easy recipes for chicken, steak, pork, and veggie versions of your favorite meal. Add homemade toppings -- like pineapple salsa or avocado crema -- for a meal so tasty that your family will never again be satisfied with the pre-packaged spice blends.

1. Chili Lime Chicken with Pineapple Salsa

Jen at Carlsbad Cravings uses a simple chili lime rub for chicken dishes served over rice or salad, but she also recommends it for marinating chicken that you can grill and serve as tacos. Salsa made from grilled fruits and vegetables -- pineapple, onion, red pepper -- adds sweetness while letting you prepare the whole meal without turning on the oven.

2. Grilled Shrimp with Avocado Salsa

Grilled shrimp tacos from The Girl Who Ate Everything are a lighter alternative to your favorite cheese-and-beef-stuffed fried chimichanga. The raw shrimp marinate quickly and cook in under 10 minutes, while a simple avocado salsa requires avocado, onion, jalape?o, cilantro, lime juice, and olive oil.

3. Black Bean Tacos with Avocado Lime Crema

Vegetarian black bean tacos from Cooking Classy are a meatless version of traditional tacos -- and possibly even easier, since the filling is made by simmering canned black beans with salsa, chili powder, and cumin. While the beans cook, make a sour cream-inspired topping by combining avocado, Greek yogurt, cilantro, lime juice, and garlic in the food processor, and then top the tacos with the usual: cheese, lettuce, tomato, saut?ed peppers and onions, extra salsa, or hot sauce.

4. Fish Tacos with Lime Crema

A similar lime crema -- made with sour cream, mayonnaise, lime juice, lime zest, and salt -- is the finishing touch for fish tacos from Ahead of Thyme. Marinate your favorite kind of white fish in a mixture of oil, lime juice, cumin, paprika, coriander, and other herbs and spices for 15 minutes, and then bake the fish for 10 minutes. Oven baked buffalo chicken tacos from Gal on a Mission are a party-ready alternative to your usual taco recipe, especially since you can make the filling ahead of time and bake the tacos just before serving. Bake and shred the chicken, and then combine it with a creamy buffalo sauce made from cream cheese, butter, and hot sauce; then fill hard taco shells, top with cheese, and bake for 20 minutes. Serve with your favorite toppings for an easy, make-ahead entree or appetizer.

6. Slow Cooker Carnitas

Using both the slow cooker and the broiler to make carnitas gives you a finished meal that's both tender and crispy -- without having to spend all day watching the meat on the stove. Ali from Gimme Some Oven browns the pork on the stove first, adds it to the slow cooker with onion, beer, chipotle powder, cumin, and chili powder; and after 4-8 hours, she crisps the ends by putting the shredded meat under the broiler for a few minutes. 7. Honey Lime Steak with Avocado Crema
