As you probably know, Prince, the Grammy-winning, 100 million record-selling singer/songwriter/entertainer passed away yesterday. And though you probably know all the words to "Kiss" and remember his truly epic Super Bowl performance of 2007, there may be some surprising things that you didn't know the legendary artist did. Read on to hear some fascinating facts about things you'll be thanking Prince for in the year to come.

Paving the way for artistic freedom (and giving musicians the respect they deserve)

In the '90s, Prince had major beef with his label, Warner Brothers, and appeared with the word "Slave" written on his face to protest the terms of his contract. When his contract ended, he released a triple album called "Emancipation" on his independent label NPG. We'd like to think that empowered artists like Taylor Swift, who wrote a famous letter about Apple music, and Ke$ha, who is currently in legal battles with her label, to stand up for themselves.

A slew of amazing pop songs (that he didn't sing!)

Though you know most of Prince's biggest hits, did you know that he also wrote "Nothing Compares 2 U" for Sinead O'Connor, "Manic Monday" for the Bangles and "I Feel for You" for Chaka Khan? Because, you know, he had so much time on his hands while releasing 39 studio albums during his music career.

And just a ton of songs in general

Yes, Prince completed 39 studio albums, 4 live albums, and 6 compilation albums for a total of more than 600 tracks. And about 100 of those became singles!

Making dancing at concerts MANDATORY

Prince is famous for his skills as a live performer, dancing, singing, and completely owning the stage. He's also famous for pulling people from the audience to dance with him. So when Kim Kardashian joined him on stage and merely swayed back and forth, Prince was not having it -- and told her to get off the stage! Lesson learned: When Prince tells you to dance, you do it!

Being one of the only artists to hold the number one spots for movie, album, and single at the same time

On the week of July 27, 1985, Prince's "Purple Rain" was number one at the box office, the soundtrack was the number one album, and "When Doves Cry" was the number one single!

For providing the music for George Lucas' wedding

We knew the Force was strong in Prince, but it seems that the famed "Star Wars" director knew that, too. That's right, Prince performed at George Lucas' 2013 wedding to Mellody Hobson -- we bet wedding guests had the time of their lives!
