With the holidays comes an influx of entertaining in our homes. Even if you aren't hosting a big holiday meal, chances are that you may be having friends over for some holiday cheer or may have the unexpected visitor swing by because they are back in their hometown visiting family. While it may seem like it's too late to give your home a makeover before the doorbell rings, that's not the case at all. Here are five ways you can update your home in time for the holidays without hiring a decorator or spending a fortune.

1. Reupholster your dining chairs

There may be no easier project than reupholstering a chair or bench seat. Even if you don't think you are capable of it, I promise you are. Find a fabric (bolder is better), grab your staple gun, and within about an hour you'll have a completely new look for your seating area.

2. Switch out your throw pillows

Have you looked at the throw pillows on your couch or armchairs lately? Perhaps they are still stuck in the summer season or worse yet, the kids have trampled them having pillow fights and spilled their juice boxes on them.

Head to your local home decorating discount store and pick up a few inexpensive pillows that are seasonally appropriate and will add a pop of color to freshen up the look of your room.

3. Hang new curtains

You might not have time to have custom draperies made, but simply swapping out your curtains with ready-made panels from your local home decorating box store will do the trick.

Window treatments have a huge impact on the lighting in your rooms so switch to a sheer if you need more light to brighten up the space or look for velvets and heavy cottons if you want to make the space feel cozier.

4. Declutter

Has your home been taken over by the giant toy monster or are you having trouble seeing through the stacks of catalogs that have been flooding your mailbox? Now is the perfect time to declutter your living space.

There are likely more toys in your near future so weed out the ones that your kids don't play with or that just aren't age appropriate anymore. Place the ones you are keeping in baskets or a toy chest, and move as many as possible to your children's bedrooms or play rooms.

And it's impossible to actually page through all those catalogs so ditch the ones that you aren't likely to buy from. You can always surf the internet to look at their offerings.

5. Add a little ambiance

A cluster of candles on the mantle, a candy dish filled with mints, simmer scents or some fresh flowers on an end table are the small touches that make a house feel like a home that if filled with people who enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

Whether you do one or all of these things, you're space will have fresh look in just a few hours and with just a few bucks. Not only will you feel on top of your game on throughout the holiday season, but having a fresh look in your space is a great way to start the new year.
