Making Avocados Even Better (and Riper, and Longer-Lasting)

If you’re like me and love for this delicious fruit (Did you know avocados are a fruit? More specifically a berry), you realize that picking the perfect avocado and saving half for later is not always an easy feat. Sure we could just inhale the entire avocado, no matter how ripe, during each meal, but sometimes that’s just not possible. So if your answer is always “yes, I’ll have avocado on that,” you’re going to love these five avocado hacks.

    Pick the Ripest Ones

Look underneath the stem if you want to pick the perfect avocado. If the stem doesn’t come off easily, the avocado isn’t ripe yet. If the skin under the stem is brown, it’s too ripe. If it’s green, it’s perfect and ready to eat!

    Speed Up Ripening

If you need to make guacamole now but your avocados are days away from being ripe, try this hack. Slice the avocados, add lemon juice and a little salt, place in a baking dish, and bake at 300° for 10 minutes. You’ll have a delicious avocado when it cools. But if you have a few days, stick it in a paper bag with an apple, banana, or a pear and close tightly. The fruits emit ethylene gas that promotes ripening.

Storing Them is The Pits (In a Good Way!)

If you’re saving half of your avocado for later, always store the side with the pit. This helps slow down the oxidation that cause that yucky browning. Put the avocado in a plastic container and toss in a few chunks of onion. Your avocado will stay fresher longer and it’s won’t affect the taste. You can even do this with guacamole to keep it tasting and looking fresh for a few days.

    Don't Fear the Refrigerator

If you’ve patiently waited for your avocado to ripen, but you aren’t ready to eat it just yet—I know, sounds crazy, but it happens—toss it in the fridge. The cold slows the ripening down and will help that yummy fruit stay perfect for a few more days.

    Freeze Them

Go ahead and grab a bunch of avocados on sale and use this hack to freeze them for later. Cut the avocados in half, remove the pit, wrap each half tightly in plastic wrap, place them in a freezer bag and toss them in the freezer for up to three months. If you’re going to use them in smoothies for guacamole, you can blend the avocados with a little lemon, pack it into an ice cube tray, and freeze. The avocado cubes can be stored in a freezer bag and are perfect for all your avocado recipes.
