You pick out the most expensive car seat you can find, strap up your child and think that it will protect them. These two paramedics think differently. Together they have seen dozens of terrible car accidents. They have seen more devastating scenes and crushed cars than they can count. But what is the difference between an effective and a defective car seat?

Krystal Kleidon of Project Hot Mess stated in a Facebook post that, "Between my husband and I, in our 20 year's experience, we have NOT seen a single child harmed in a car accident where the child was restrained in their seat properly." She stated that no matter how big the price tag is on your child's car seat, that doesn't ensure their safety, especially if it is not being used properly. "The biggest difference between a child's safety hasn't been if they were in the $600 car seat or the $200 one. It's been about those straps," Krystal explains.

You should strap your child in tight enough so that if you flipped them upside down they wouldn't fall out of their car seat. So many parents neglect to properly tighten the straps because it makes their child uncomfortable. But when it comes to your child's safety, having a somewhat uncomfortable car ride is better than having loose straps. Krystal encourages all parents that next time they strap up their child in a car seat ask the question, "would I be confident in turning them upside down in the seat right now?"
