Little white lies don't count, right?

April 30th is National Honesty Day, which encourages people to truth-talk all day long. And though we believe honesty is usually the best policy, it's hard to find someone who hasn't told at least one little white lie (Think: "No, honey, you haven't gained any weight.").

According to various polls and studies, both men and women lie -- and it's more than you might think. One 2010 poll found that men are more likely to stretch the truth, lying an average of 1,092 lies per year -- roughly three a day -- while women lie an average of 728 times a year, or about twice a day. An older study estimates a few fewer fibs -- most people tell between one to two per day -- but the point is that people lie, period. However, women tend to lie to save someone's feelings, while men tend to lie to win an argument or save money.

These lies can range from little white lies to some pretty big whoopers, and guess who gets lied to the most? MOMS! Twenty-five percent of men and 20 percent of women claimed to hide the truth from their moms, according to the 2010 poll. Here are the top 10 lies that the women in the poll admitted to:

  1. Nothing's wrong, I'm fine.
  2. I don't know where it is, I haven't touched it.
  3. It wasn't that expensive.
  4. I didn't have that much to drink.
  5. I've got a headache.
  6. It was on sale.
  7. I'm on my way.
  8. Oh, I've had this for ages.
  9. No, I didn't throw it away.
  10. It's what I've always wanted.

Though these weren't in the poll, we think you can safely add them to the list:

Lie: Me? I weigh 130 pounds.
What you really mean: Well you did, about 10 years ago...

Lie: I stopped smoking years ago!
What you really mean: But sometimes if I get stressed, I sneak one...or three

Lie: What? That dress/shirt/skirt looks fabulous on you!
What you really mean: It's not the best, but we're running late, and I need you to pick out your outfit already!
