Rude Diners Leave “LOL” Instead of a Tip

If you are reading this within earshot of any youngsters, you might want to read it out loud as a perfect lesson in how not to treat people in the service industry.

A waitress in Belmar, New Jersey recently served a party of eight and upon receiving their paid receipt, was met instead with a snarky comment instead of a tip. Their gripe? It took an hour for their food to arrive, but according to Jessica Corinne, the waitress in question, they were "satisfied with filled drinks and proper notice that the kitchen was busier than normal." But apparently not satisfied enough to refrain from leaving "LOL" where a tip should be.

Last night, I was stunned by this receipt that was left for me by a party of eight people. I would have preferred a "$0"...

Corinne posted the above to her Facebook account, and it has since caught fire on the internet. As she points out, as outraged as those of us who know it's typically not the waitress' fault when food arrives late, it's far more common than we'd like to think. And what people might not realize is how little waitstaff is paid.

"We make $2.50 an hour," she wrote. "Most of my paychecks are less than pocket change because I have to pay taxes on the tips I make. I need tips to pay my bills."

The lesson here: think twice about hurting someone's livelihood before having them wait on you for more than an hour for free.
